The new frontier of electric propulsion starts from Genoa and reaches 32 knots

Phase Motion Control and Brim Tech turn the impossible into a reality with a new generation of
high-performance boats.

Phase Motion Control, a leading company based in Genoa in the field of electric propulsion, and the Norwegian company Brim Tech have developed an innovative technology for electric boats, combining sustainability and advanced performance. This collaboration has led to the design of an electric propulsion system capable of challenging the current limits of maritime transport.

Brim Tech, initially involved with environmentally friendly sailing boats, collaborated with Phase to find an innovative solution for electric propulsion. Both companies realized that it was not enough to simply install an electric motor on a traditional boat: it was necessary to completely redesign in order to reduce fuel consumption and optimize range.

Advanced studies on hydrodynamics and propeller efficiency have revealed that large-diameter, low-speed propellers reduce friction with water and increase thrust. On this basis, Phase designed a new-generation permanent-magnet motor capable of transmitting torque directly to the propeller without the use of gearboxes. This makes the system not only more efficient, but also quieter.

The real technological turning point is the electric motor that incorporates the bearing, which is usually integrated in mechanical inverters. This design considerably simplifies installation: the motor connects directly to the propeller shaft without the need for additional components, reducing weight and complexity.

The first prototype equipped with this technology is currently operating in the Oslo fjords, where it quietly and efficiently transports up to 80 people. A second faster boat was later built, equipped with two 1 MW motors, capable of reaching 32 knots, showing that electric boats can also compete on high performance.

Currently, Phase Motion Control and Brim Tech are developing a trimaran with an even more efficient design that will mark a further step forward in electric propulsion technology.

This series of innovations is the result of more than 30 years of experience at Phase Motion Control, demonstrating how the integration of innovation and sustainability can redefine the future of maritime transport.
